Mojave yucca is an important species of dry rocky flats it creosote bush scrub, Joshua tree woodland, and blackbrush scrub in the southern and eastern Mojave Desert at elevations up to about 5,000 feet. Its range also extends west across the Peninsular Range of Southern California and reaches the coast at Torrey Pines State Park north of San Diego. This species is recognized by a conspicuous above-ground stem thatched with dead leaves and forming a roesette of stiff spine-tipped leaves up to 4 feet in length. While single-trunked plants are typical, clumped clusters of trunks are also found. Overall, the plants are commonly 4-8 feet in height but can reach as tall as 15 feet. The narrow leaves are distinctive not only for their length but their yellow-green color, white base, and margin of peeling fibers. Mojave yucca reproduces vegetatively from underground rhizomes. Clusters of cream-colored flowers are produced in April and May on leafless stalks 2-4 feet in length.
