Hoffmannsseggia microphyla

 Hoffmannssegia microphyla (rushpea) ( )

Fabaceae

  • Rushpea inhabits washes and arroyos in the lower Sonoran Desert. The common name of this legume shrub comes from its green, rush-like stems that reach 2-4 feet or more in height. The pinnately divided leaves are short-lived, with a significant amount of the photosynthetic responsibility given to the green stems which can attain high rates of photosynthetic output.
